Campus: Bilbao

Purpose of the position:

The purpose of the position is to strengthen the research capacity of the research group in sustainability impact assessment. This requires advancing quantitative sustainability science by developing integrated frameworks to evaluate the environmental and socio-economic performance of complex systems.

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to high-impact scientific outputs, support competitive funding applications, and foster methodological innovation at the intersection of environmental assessment and system modelling.

Research Topic:

The research will focus on performing research in line with sustainable use of environmental resources in society. We support applications linked to some of the following research topics:

  • Food supply chains and food waste management
  • Water cycle and pollution at urban and regional scales
  • Land management
  • Similar topics are also welcome

We are particularly interested in hosting researchers with data and/or digital approaches, with strong methodological backgrounds aimed at developing methods and/or solutions for real-life applications

Objectives of the position:

  • Developing science-based sustainability models to evaluate transition strategies in key sectors (e.g., food sector, or energy sector, textile sector, waste sector, etc), specifically incorporating temporal dimensions, feedback mechanisms, and the rebound effect to capture long-term systemic consequences and have a comprehensive view of the whole impact in the system.
  • Publishing in high impact journals (WoS and SJR) along with group members
  • Working in competitive projects (Basque Government, Spanish Government, Horizon Europe…)
  • Submitting competitive research proposals

Principal Investigator:

  • Roberto Garay Martínez, PhD

We offer:

  • Duration: The contract will be for 3 years.
  • Amount and terms of paymen An allocation of 37,000€ to 41,000€ gross euros per year will be granted, distributed into 15 monthly installments, depending on the candidate’s experience.

Applicants from general science (Mathematics, physics,…) and or ICT (Informatics,…) are welcome, but strong and traceable experience in the domain of research will be required. All PhD holders may apply; however, we especially encourage applications from those who completed their PhD in 2023 or later.
  • Proven experience in sustainability assessment frameworks (e.g., LCA, MFA, IOA, IAMs, etc), and/or domain-specific knowledge (based on the specific research topic to be proposed).
  • Ability to translate complex research questions into computational models (using Python, Simapro, R, MATLAB, etc) for reproducible science.
  • Fluent in English (C1).
  • Track-record in scientific writing and publication. Several publications in high-impact journals in the field.
  • International Profile: Academic and research experience in international environments will be valued.

Evaluation criteria for candidates:

  • Proven ability to secure funding and manage financial resources for research initiatives.
  • Strong collaborative skills, with a demonstrated ability to integrate into multidisciplinary teams.
  • Expertise in translating research findings into computational models.
  • Experience and contribution in research projects and active participation within international consortiums.

  • Relevance of work presented at scientific or technical conferences.
  • Recognition received through awards, honors, or distinctions.
  • Scope and impact of participation in scientific outreach activities.
  • International research stays with a duration of more than four weeks.
  • Candidates who meet the Marie Curie international mobility criteria—i.e., those who have not lived, worked, or studied in Spain for more than 12 months during the three years immediately prior to the application deadline—will be given positive consideration, though meeting this criterion is not required.
